Legal Proofreading Class—EDGAR Overview
Back to Outline

EDGAR is an acronym for Electronic Data Gathering Analysis and Retrieval. EDGAR is a searchable database of compliance documents. Publicly-owned companies, for example, must file quarterly (10-Q) and annual (10-K) reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission (the SEC). These documents are maintained in electronic format for viewing by the public.

Originally, EDGAR documents were available only in ASCII format. ASCII stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange and consists of a limited number of characters into which typeset documents (documents in book form) would be converted. Today, EDGAR documents are also filed in HTML (HyperText Markup Language, the code used for creating web documents) format as well. As a legal proofreader, you will be working with both EDGAR ASCII and EDGAR HTML documents.

Our legal proofreading class covers all you will need to know (and more!) about EDGAR ASCII and EDGAR HTML. We will break down the most important EDGAR ASCII and EDGAR HTML points for you in an easy to understand format. You will complete EDGAR exercises, EDGAR homework, and practice EDGAR tests.

Go to our Links Page to find links to EDGAR ASCII and EDGAR HTML pages, as well as a number of other subjects covered in our legal proofreading class.
